I first met Mark Fradgley in 2010 and rode with him for an hour on his John O'Groats to Land's End challenge. We got on well. My youngest daughter has also had open heart surgery so the hour long chat mainly revolved around blood, morphine and drainage tubes.

I cycled home knowing that Mark has terminal cancer and I'd not be seeing him again. I stood in my kitchen and cried whilst trying to explain to my wife the bond I'd just made with a dying man.

But he's still alive. And if he keeps bullying cancer the way he has so far, he's likely to outlive us all.
